A friend told me about an ancient site tucked into the cliffs, but leaves its exact location for me to figure out. With a backpack and a rough idea of where to look, I head out to find it and end up spending two days trying to locate it.

Along the way, I come across petroglyphs likely left by Ancestral Puebloan people--traces of lives once lived in this country. I spend the night in the backcountry, then continue searching the cliffs the next morning, wondering what might be around the next bend. #southwest #deserts #ancientcivilizations #nature

Some places endure because they are respected. By no means do I consider myself an expert on anything other than wandering the wild places of the southwest.

I’ve never come across a pictograph like this before. After enhancing the photo, details begin to stand out—what looks like long hair, a beard, and even lines radiating from the head. Could this represent a spiritual figure? A deity? Or perhaps someone important from the past? I’ve explored countless sites across the American Southwest, but I’ve never seen a petroglyph or pictograph that clearly shows a beard until now.

Today is all about exploration and discovery! I set out to a new location, curious about what I might find. Throughout the day, I searched for lost rock art, ancient structures, and any clues that could reveal the presence of the ancients.

Desert Center is a "Ghost Town" in southern California founded by Stephen Ragsdale and his wife Lydia in 1921. In 1915 Stephen Ragsdale was living in the Palo Verde Valley, he had to make the long journey to Los Angele, CA for business matter when his car broke down in the desert near what then called Gruendyke's Well. Mr. Bill Gruendyke helped Mr. Ragsdale with repairs and got him back on the road so he could resume his trip to Los Angeles.

On his return Steve aka Desert Steve bought out Bill Gruendyke and moved his family out to the location where he eventually put up a small repair shop. By the mid 1920s the Highway that ran by the "old Desert Center" was being rerouted a few miles south. Steve adapted, packed up shop and moved the town to its present day location. He eventually put up a cafe, gas station, and service garage. in the years to come he would erect a post office, cabins for weary travelers and a pool.

Some buildings and businesses have come and gone over the the years but the town continued on, serving those making the long dreaded journey across the barren desert. For a variety of reasons the town started to decline in the mid 80s and by 2012 the cafe which had been open since 1921 finally closed its doors. today the only remaining building in operation is the Post Office

Exploring the American Southwest with my son, we came across a band of ruins tucked in a deep in an oasis canyon. Routes leading behind waterfalls and up rugged slopes created an experience!
